First National Informatics Centre Computer Emergency Response Team (NIC CERT) Launched
The
centre has been formed to ensure official channels remain insulated from cyber
threats at a time of growing incidents of attacks from within and outside.
IT
Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said growing role of Digital India has seen a lot
of services going online. “This has made the services highly accessible, it has
also exposed them to threats and vulnerabilities,” he said. The National
Informatics Centre (NIC) helps government agencies build their digital presence
while CERT-India is the official agency to track, prevent and tackle cyber
threats.
There has been an exponential growth in cyber-attacks leading to data theft
concerns, which led to the Centre drafting Data Protection Act. “As Internet is
touching the life of people, it necessitates requirement to scale up the
existing security infrastructure,” Prasad said. The government has also called
a meeting of state IT ministers to further work on cyber security in January.
Prasad said the Centre will monitor movement of information against any
suspicious activity and alert concerned parties of any malicious activity.
