Tech Tips - Same tool, different features @ PC vs Apps
With the lines blurring between
smartphones and PCs, productivity tools are trying to reflect similar
capabilities
With the lines blurring between smartphones
and PCs, productivity tools are trying to reflect similar capabilities. Not all
of them, however, are replicated the same way. We take a look at four popular
tools with features unique to each platform.
Microsoft
Word
PC
■
With the Save Zoom level feature, PC users can change and save a particular
zoom level in Word that they are more comfortable with.
■
Users can split-view a document into two or more pages.
■ Users can also access LinkedIn’s AI-backed Resume Assistant in Word.
It can help them prepare better résumés by giving suggestions and identifying
skills needed for a job.
App
■
Word’s app for
phones saves your documents by itself, so you don’t have to do it manually at frequent
intervals.
■
Word on mobile also supports voice-based typing. Just speak after tapping the
voice-to-type button on the keyboard and the text will type by itself.
Google
Chrome
PC
■ PC
users can switch to any other Google app on Chrome browsers as separate tabs,
instead of opening separate apps.
■
Chrome on PC has a vast trove of extensions which can enhance productivity and
browser functionality.
u Chrome users can find how secure a website is simply by
clicking on the URL bar, which may be important for banking websites.
App
■ The
Data Saver mode in the Chrome app compresses web pages by stripping them of all
resource-intensive elements such as big fonts, videos and images, so that they
load quickly, even on slow networks.
■
Mobile users can save any web page or story and access it later in the offline
mode.
■
Chrome on mobile suggests news and articles on the home page itself. The
suggestions are based on users’
web and app activity.
Gmail
PC
■
Recall mail allows PC users to recall a sent mail within 9 seconds by clicking
on the undo mail icon that pops up after a mail is sent.
■
Customizable themes on PC allow personalization of the Gmail interface. Users
can also take full advantage of keyboard short-cuts, which makes composing a
mail, search, etc., a lot faster.
■
Gmail users on PC can access their inbox and compose a mail even when there is
no internet connection. The mail will be sent automatically when connectivity
is restored.
■
Unlike the mobile app, Gmail for PC comes with a built-in messenger, allowing
users to chat while simultaneously going through mails.
App
■ The
smart reply feature in the Gmail app uses machine learning to suggest smart,
contextual replies to emails when a user doesn’t have the time to type a response
manually.
■ The
Gmail app can convert a mobile number in an email into a hyperlink, allowing
users to make calls by simply tapping on it.
Microsoft
Outlook
PC
■ The
create rule feature in Outlook on PC allows users to sort all incoming mails
according to the name of the sender and the keywords in the subject line.
■ PC
users can customize the name of categories and add colour codes that would help
them identify mails easily.
■ The
offline feature allows users to access mail even when their laptop or desktop
is not connected to the internet.
■ The
Outlook Social Connector allows PC users to access their contacts, messages and
updates on Facebook and LinkedIn in Outlook.
App
■ The
people tab in the Outlook app shows the contacts you have interacted with the
most. Users can see all the mails, meetings and files shared with a particular
contact.
■ The swipe-to-customize feature is
designed to take full advantage of the touch screen on phones. Swiping right
schedules a mail and swiping left archives it.
■ The
app allows users to sync their contacts on other email apps such as Gmail or
Yahoo.com.
