IN THE MARKET PLACE
WITH
NEWER MARKETING TOOLS COMING INTO VOGUE, COLLEGES ARE INCORPORATING SUBJECTS TO
EQUIP STUDENTS WITH SKILLS THAT MATCH THE NEW AGE MARKET REQUIREMENTS
Entrepreneurship
in India is witnessing a boom with many ideas being converted into businesses.
With a rise in the number of companies, there is also an increase in demand for
smart marketing strategists. Marketing is no longer limited to the traditional
doorto-door selling, print advertising, television and radio broadcasting.
“Marketing has moved a long way from
traditional marketing to relationship marketing. With the shift in the economy
from the old brick and mortar model to the new click and tap one, digital
marketing practices are increasing day by day. Social media tools like
Facebook, Twitter and a host of other tools have reduced the physical distance
between the provider and consumer,“ explains Prof S V Satyanarayana, head,
department of commerce, Osmania University, Hyderabad. “Viral marketing and
buzz marketing have increased their presence in the web world. The pricing of
products for goods and services have moved from being influenced by the
traditional demand and supply factors to being more dynamic as witnessed in
aviation and railways.
Crowd sourcing has become a novel way for new
product ideas. With advancements in supply chain management and logistics, utility
is today better supported by technology,“ he says.
With an increasing number of tools available,
colleges are continuously working towards updating their curriculum to match
industry requirements. Whether it is specialised marketing subjects in the second
year of a B Com course or designing a specialised marketing course under the
commerce stream, many colleges in the south are providing a platform for
students to learn the different techniques of marketing. for goods and services

students to learn the different techniques of marketing. “Students are
introduced to marketing in Indian and international markets through the
marketing management book written by Philip Kotler. After which, students are
taught promotion management where they are trained on the promotion mix –
advertisement, sales promotion, publicity and personal selling. Under personal
selling, they are taught the basics of consumer customer interaction,
negotiating and selling,“ says Dr Ravi Kumar V, vice-principal, CMS College of
Science and Commerce, Coimbatore.
Incorporating recent trends in marketing,
Kumar says colleges are adding subjects like e-commerce, emarketing and online
marketing.
“Students are introduced to basics of
information technology to help them become familiar with web marketing
techniques,“ he adds.
Many colleges are prioritising visual and
social media marketing. The faculty is educating students on various techniques
of digital marketing where they are taught planning and execution of a
marketing strategy on the digital platform and helping them understand app
engine optimisation.
“After completion of the course, students can
get placed in retail banks, insurance, retail stores, malls, department stores
and numerous small scale industries,“ says Dr Nirmala Mohan, head, department
of Commerce, Madras Christian College, Chennai. Students also have career options
like content writing, space allocation management, adver tising, creative
designing, branding, logistics, merchandising and visual merchandising management.
For better For better placement opportunities,
Karishma Khatri, marketing manager, says an internship in a good company adds
weight to your resume. “When I was a student, I got a chance to intern with an
e-commerce company, an advertising agency, an event organising company and also
did content writing for a website. These internships helped my resume stand
out, attracting many companies. As soon as I graduated, I was placed with a
reputed ecommerce company where I promoted self-publishers in India and now, I
work with an e-ticketing company where I organise and promote events,“ she
says. Regardless of the size of the company and the role, it is ideal to start
off in a mid-level company as students get to experiment more, she feels .
“As compared to an established company that
have set rules and regulations, it is easier to play around different and
innovative ideas in a medium level company. A fresher can start simple and grow
faster in such companies,“ she adds.
