800 parents
vote for books over tablets
An online petition against
introduction of tablet computers in classrooms has received support from over
800 people in the country. The petition has been started by a group of parents
of students at Vibgyor High group of schools to protest a decision to do away
with books and introduce tablets for kids.
“This
introduction of new way of teaching through digital way was a real shock... The
more shocking news was that it was made as compulsory with additional cost
burden of another Rs.20,000 each...“ read the petition on change.org.
From
next academic year, tablets will replace textbooks at four centres of Vibgyor
High Group of schools, which is introducing its digital curriculum for its
class V students.
On
Sunday, over 150 parents met to discuss their further course of action. “We do
not have an objection to technology but there has been a lot of research which
says that students must not be exposed to tabs for long hours,“ said a parent.
Kavita
Sahay, director of the school said, “...Learning through tablets will be at the
discretion of parents. We will continue to provide books. Parents who are
willing to buy the specific tablet are free to buy it from any merchant of
their choice. There is no compulsion...“
