A study titled “Internet addiction and
its association with psychopathology: A study in schoolchildren from Mumbai”
The
study was carried out by the Department of Psychiatry at Lokmanya Tilak
Municipal Medical College, Mumbai, on 603 youngsters studying between classes 8
and 10.
Findings
·
Found
prevalence of internet addiction in 3.96 per cent boys and 1.62 per cent girls
·
Over
15 per cent of the sample showed internet overuse but not addiction
·
Stress
scores were significantly correlated with the internet-use patterns in both
sexes
·
Most
students browsed the internet at home while over 50 per cent of the sample
owned mobile phones or laptops or both.
·
Both
sexes used the internet mainly for social networking — 36.3 per cent used the
internet for three-five hours a day for social networking.
·
Apart
from social networking, boys used it for entertainment and gaming also.
·
The
report says 43.3 per cent boys spent time on the internet mostly in the evening
while 57.7 per cent girls said they preferred early morning hours.
·
The
study found 44.5 per cent boys owned mobile phones while 30.9 per cent had
laptops; 53.8 per cent girls who participated in the study had mobile phones;
19 per cent owned laptops.

But
none of the students went to a cyber café, often visited by students across
India, the study found.
