UGC to colleges : Opt for energy-saving devices

Opt for energy-saving devices: UGC to colleges

In a bid to put across the point of energy saving to the young generation, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has requested colleges and universities to become conscious about energy usage on campus. The UGC has asked for replacing electrical appliances with energysaving appliances like LED lights, water coolers, in order to control one’s energy indulgence.

“In order to affect energy savings in the long term, there is a need to use energy-efficient appliances like top star rated air-conditioners, frost-free refrigerators, ceiling fans, water coolers as well as LED lights,” states the circular dated April 7. The purpose, states the circular, is to “make India selfreliant in energy”. Even though this circular by the UGC comes now, a host of colleges in Mumbai have already initiated the process of making their campus environment-friendly.

DG Ruparel College was one of the first colleges in the city to install a rainwater harvesting system way back in 2008, in order to be able to provide water for thousands of students that study as well as live on campus. “Other than rainwater harvesting, we have also installed solar panels to be used for water heaters in the hostel buildings. Similarly, we also have replaced all tube lights and bulbs on campus with LED fittings and the energy consumption has reduced drastically in the past few months,” said Tushar Desai, principal of the college. The college is currently also working on installing a zerowaste model on campus.
