Press Release

Pvt schools told to instal CCTVs

Soon, private schools across the state will have to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras.  The state education department has issued instructions following a Bombay high court order to the effect in January.

In a government resolution (GR) dated April 7, the school education department has instructed all private management schools from all mediums in the state to install CCTV cameras on their premises within six months. “Keeping in mind the security of students, CCTVs must be installed in schools. They must be fixed in areas that need to be under watch and steps must be taken to ensure they function smoothly, “said deputy secretary, Ramchandra Gunjal in the GR. Education officers have been instructed to check on schools and the functioning of the CCTVs and submit a report every six months.

Nandkumar, principal secretary, school education, said it would be mandatory for all schools to instal cameras. While the GR's instructions are applicable to private aided and unaided schools, Nandkumar said the state was in the process of evaluating the expense for government schools. “We have started the process to draw estimates of how much it will cost us to install these in the state-run schools. Once budgets are approved, necessary steps will be taken to install these in government schools too. “

The HC had issued directives to install CCTVs in schools, following the molestation of a nine-year-old in a Dadar school, allegedly by a canteen employee.

The state, though, has said that no grants will be made available to schools for CCTVs. “We are already short of funds and we hardly getting any aid from the government, except for salary grants,“ said the principal of a suburban school. Some plan to turn to alumni and CSR funds. “CCTVs will not only benefit students but also teachers and schools as well. In case we cannot afford to install these, we can ask the alumni or local organizations to donate for the same,“ said Prashant Redij, principal, Hilda Castelino School, Malad.
