Land Hurdle
in New IIT Campuses at Chhattisgarh & Goa
LOCAL FIX Goa to amend its land law to
find space for IIT while Chhattisgarh campus will be spread over three areas
While every state queues up to win an
IIT or IIM, finding it a worthy enough campus in another battle altogether. If
Chhattisgarh's IIT campus will be a combination mode with three establishments
from Bhilai to Naya Raipur, tourist haven Goa needs to amend its land law to
find space for the IIT.
Stuck
for months due to land una vailability in Goa, the proposed new IIT in the
state will now find its per manent campus only when the state a m e n d s i t s
l a n d l aw. T h e Communidades of Goa -the com munity land holding system
prevalent in Goa-needs to be amended to ensure that at least 300 acres are made
available to set up a state-ofthe-art IIT. As per requirements set out by the
Centre, a 500 acres campus is envisaged for the new IITs keeping in mind future
needs and expansion. Due to land constraints in the coastal state and things
already running slow, the requirement has been pruned to about 300 acres for
Goa. The land amendment is expected to be taken up at the coming assembly
session.
The
IIT Goa permanent campus is expected to come up in Canacona in South Goa. It
will operate temporar ily from the Goa Engineering college campus, of fering
Electrical, Mechanical and computer Science engineering to a batch of 120
students starting this year.
The
IIT Chhattisgarh has had a political twits to its tale. It will come up in
Bhilaithe constituency of the state's Higher Education minister Prem Prakash
Pandey. While the Centre has been pitching for the campus in Naya Raipur, the
state government has been insistent on steel hub Bhilai. It has finally been
agreed that while a 349 acres campus for IIT Bhilai will come at Kutelabhata,
another 83 acres will be earmarked at close by Sirsa which will be connected to
the main campus through a road the state government has committed to develop.
Another 10 acres will be allotted in Naya Raipur to serve as an Extension
centre.
Funds
have not been released to both IIT Goa and Chhattisgarh pend ing land issues
for the permanent campus but the two IITs are expected to start operating this
year on.
Among
the other new IITsIIT Tirupati will operate off a 511 acres campus in Chittoor
district, IIT Palakkad in Kerala will come up on 501 acre area--both states are
in the process of handing over most of the land for development. For IIT Jammu,
405 acres forest land has been dereserved in Nagrota area and handed over to
mentor IITIIT Delhi, while IIT Karnataka will come up on a 507 acres area in
Dharwad.
The
process for appointments of Directors to the new IITs is also set to begin.
