IIT
BOMBAY WILL BE SETTING UP A RESEARCH PARK TO CONNECT INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS
WITH THE INSTITUTE'S STUDENTS IN A BID TO FOSTER THE SPIRIT OF INNOVATION
The
Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) will soon set up a research park
to build an ecosystem where academic researchers from the institute will work
with industry partners in close collaboration on research problems, technology
challenges and product innovation.
With a
partial funding from Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of
India, the research park will promote and foster innovation at the campus.
As an
initial step towards establishing the park, the institute recently organised a
day-long academia-industry meet.
Devang
Khakhar, director, IIT Bombay said, “The research park will mutually benefit
the industry as well as the institute and will play a pivotal role in removing
the barriers between the industry researchers and academic researchers.“ As
part of his speech at the meeting, he welcomed suggestions from the industry on
how the institute could build a good research park.
The event
also included a panel discussion on the role of the research park in fostering
academia-industry collaboration. The meet was attended by Debasis Bandyopadhyay,
Vice President and Global Head, Tata Consultancy Services; R Muralidharan, CTO,
Tata Power SED; Rajkumar Singh, Senior Director, Bharat Forge; Kapil Bardeja,
CEO, Nanosniff Technologies Pvt Ltd, etc.
Modelled
on the lines of the research park at IIT Madras, IITB's research park will
assist companies with a research focus to set-up a base at the campus. These
companies, whose founders need not necessarily be from an IIT, will get an
opportunity to interact with the IIT faculty and students. It will also provide
space for incubators, where startups can be nurtured. The park will also offer
an opportunity to industry employees to enrol for the postgraduate programmes
at the institute and participate in various academic activities.
