Taking a break from work is like injecting
fresh oxygen to the body and is a productivity booster, says cardiologist, Dr Naresh
Trehan. But an unplanned vacation can be counter-productive.Prachi Verma brings
you tips on executing your break well.
1 Give Prior Notice
This is one
surprise your team leader will not take well. Unless it is an emergency, most
organisations dissuade employees from taking leave without notice. “The notice
to the team should be sent well in time. This gives the team leader and the
firm enough time to look for a back-up,“ said Krish Subramanian, co-founder and
CEO at ChargeBee.
2 Work Ahead
As soon as
your dates are decided, start working ahead. “Prioritise tasks and start work
ahead on projects that are critical and cannot be delegated.Think of situations
that may crop up along with relevant solutions and contingency plans,“ said
Swapnil Kamat, founder & CEO of Work Better Training.
3 Delegate Clearly
Before
leaving, assign people who will be in charge of your work in your absence.
“Customers, colleagues and even investors should know who to approach in your
absence. Also there should clarity in delegation of work,“ said Subramanian.
4 Take Stock of E-mails
In between
your vacation, sifting through your email is also necessary if you are in a
critical role, especially if you are on several weeks of break.Subramanian uses
reminder tools to separate the urgent mails from others.
5 Put in Extra Hours
“If needed,
go the extra mile and put in a couple of extra hours at work daily before your
vacation begins,“ Kamat added. Always be reminded whenever you are working that
extra hour that soon, you are going on a vacation.
