Akashvani in The Digital Age @ Website & Mobile App

To keep up with the modern times, AIR is expanding its reach, with the help of new age technology. Here’s how you can enjoy the radio, without the radio!

The All India Radio (AIR) is the national public radio broadcaster of India, and one of the largest media organisations in the world.

Established in 1936, it now reaches out to 99.18% of the Indian population through 262 broadcasting Centres.

To keep up with the modern times, AIR is expanding its reach, with the help of new age technology. Here’s how you can enjoy the radio, without the radio!

The All India Radio Website (http://allindiaradio.gov.in/Default.aspx)

Officially known as Akashvani (Voice from the Sky) since 1956, AIR has captured the minds of the people ever since its inception. With more than 17,000 hours of music and spoken word recordings in different categories, AIR is the largest library of Indian music recordings.

As Internet usage became ubiquitous, AIR also jumped on the bandwagon and introduced its shows online, thus broadening its audience and charming them with their favourite broadcasts. This was a right step into the future because as of today, India is the second largest internet consumer in the world.

Covering almost all of the popular stations of AIR, their website broadcasts 24×7. You can check it out here and enjoy the “Voice from the Sky” while you work on your PC.

The All India Radio Mobile App (All India Radio Live)

With the advent of mobile phones, technology took a form that can fit in the palm of your hand. The AIR app was launched a few years ago and has already been downloaded several lakh times. It offers a assortment of infotainment and public services, not just in Hindi and Urdu, but also in major regional languages.

The app is incredibly accessible, and just like its website, cuts across national boundaries. It is sure to make you nostalgic, and although it is a traditional medium in the world of fast-paced communication, it is a must-have for all. You can download the it in Google Play.

The Amazon Echo

In an attempt to meet the media needs of consumers and reach out to a younger audience, AIR has teamed up with Amazon and thanks to a recent partnership between the public broadcaster and Amazon Echo service, people from all over the world can tune into AIR by giving a voice command.
To avail the ‘voice on demand’ service, listeners need to buy the ‘Echo’ device from Amazon’s e-commerce platform. AIR Director General, Shri F Sheheryar confirmed this partnership, and as per a report in the Indian Express, he also mentioned that adding there was no financial implication of this partnership for AIR.
