TRASHY LITERATURE
A group of rubbish collectors in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, has set up a library boasting thousands of discarded books that would have otherwise been sent to landfills
Residents had left their old books on the street, to be collected with other waste This gave garbage collectors the idea to recycle them Seven months ago, they set up a library at a disused brick factory
THE LIBRARY
The renovated building is now a thriving space, with shelves stacked with 4,750 books Originally intended just for the waste workers and their families, the 24-hour library is now open to the public too Another 1,500 books were donated and are yet to be placed on the shelves
The site also houses a barber’s shop, cafeteria, social area and offices for administrative staff
THE BOOKS
The books have so far been sorted into 17 categories, ranging from romance novels to economics textbooks to thrillers and children’s fiction
