New rules allow engg, mgmt institutes to run more than 1 college from same campus
The
All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will permit technical
colleges -engineering, management and architecture institutes -- to run more
than one college from the same campus, the second major relaxation in the
recent past, from the coming academic year.
The
regulatory body said while a college operating two institutes on the same
premises should have separate classrooms and laboratories, they could share common
amenities such as canteen, auditorium, playground and parking space. A
subsequent notice put out in the handbook said engineering colleges are
required to have eight laboratory rooms for each undergraduate (UG) course,
down from last year’s requirement of 10 rooms.
In
case of more than two divisions per course, the colleges need to have four
additional laboratory rooms. The earlier norms required five additional rooms.
The colleges have also been allowed to use the seminar hall of UG course for
post-graduation (PG) programmes.
The
new set of rules come as relief to engineering colleges in the state, seven of
which were barred from conducting admissions, as they had failed to meet the
norms. The regulator had also reduced the intake of many other colleges. “The
new rule will provide relief to many colleges in the city which share space
with other colleges. The rule also implies there is no need for demarcation
between multiple institutes operating in the same campus, as required earlier,”
said Gopakumaran Thampi, principal, Thadomal Shahani Engineering College (TSEC)
in Bandra.
“More
sub-par professional colleges are likely to mushroom now,” said Vaibhav
Narawade, general secretary, Citizen Forum for Sanctity in Education.
