Engineering colleges with vacant seats to be shut
New
Delhi : The
All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to close down
hundreds of engineering colleges from the next session that had more than 70%
seats vacant in the past five years.
The
decision was taken in view of nearly nine lakh out of total 17 lakh seats lying
vacant. Most of the colleges facing shortage of students are located in small
towns and rural areas.
So
far there was no rule for closing down the engineering colleges, though nearly
200 colleges themselves applied every year to shut down, though an equal number
of new colleges used to come up.
The
council sources said the new rule applies to any college that is not able to
fill up even 30% of the sanctioned seats. There are about 3500
engineering colleges in the country.
