Higher & tech edu teachers to now retire at 60
Age Was Increased In 2011 To 62 In
View Of Shortage
The state cabinet on Tuesday reduced
the retirement age of teachers in higher & technical education from 62 to
60, striking down a decision of the previous government. The government had
decided to extend the retirement age from 58 to 62 in view of a shortage of
qualified teachers in 2011.
The
government said there will be no reduction where the retirement age of 62 has
been approved. But in cases where an application has been made, it will not be
approved, and no new applications will be accepted. For principals, the
performance review policy will be applicable. Based on performance, the
retirement age will be extended from 62 to 65.
A
college teacher could have sought extension for two years at 60, only if they
had a PhD, proven record of continuous academic growth and a health certificate
from a government hospital, said a teacher, adding that it was not a blanket
extension rule. “But if teachers are willing to teach and fulfil all criteria,
the government should allow them,“ she added.
Manju
Nichani, principal of K C College, said the new development can be perceived in
both ways. “New teachers will get opportunities. But at the same time, it can be
argued that teachers who are physically fit and can continue to teach beyond
60, should be allowed to do so. In universities abroad, there is no restriction
on the retirement age of teachers.“
Nirmala
Memorial College principal Madhu Nair said that there anyway was no blanket
extension of retirement age for all teachers. “Having a PhD was a hindrance for
most teachers who sought an extension. The number of teachers who would hold a
PhD at that age was less. Not many have benefited till now for want of a PhD in
the last two years,“ said Nair.
A
suburban college principal said that with the salary drawn by a teacher at 60,
as per seniority , three new teachers can be appointed.
