Bandra to get a new book house @ library-cum-bookstore
A new library-cum-bookstore that opens
this Saturday spells good news for art and culture enthusiasts
If you still aren’t used to reading
books on Kindle or wish to spend a day amidst books on art and culture, head to
Underground Bookhouse that opens to public on Saturday. Located in near the
Mount Mary Steps in Bandra, the library-cum-bookstore is a space created by
activists and artists, Himanshu S and Aqui Thami of the Bombay Underground
collective. The duo also run the Dharavi Art Room, a non-profit that works on
several community projects focusing on women and children using the medium
of art and photography.
"Over the years, we have created
a lot of self-published titles like various issues of A5 zine, covering topics
like surveillance and counter-culture movements. They will be showcased at the
space," says the 35-year-old Himanshu. Besides, the space will also house
books, independent publications and graphic novels from Indian and
international authors like George Orwell and Roald Dahl.
"In 2005, when street booksellers
were shooed away from Churchgate and Fountain area, we picked up Rs 3 lakh
worth of books and over the years, we have been consistently buying books. So,
we have a large collection of titles. However, we will only display books
related to art, culture and activism," he adds. The book house will also
serve as a space for city’s art enthusiasts to engage with works by independent
artists.
