Public Lecture - Infosys Science Foundation recently partnered with IIT Bombay to conduct a public lecture on math to encourage students to pursue the subject at advanced levels

The Infosys Science Foun dation (ISF), in associa tion with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB), recently organised a public lecture by the Infosys Prize laureate, Madhu Sudan, principal researcher, Microsoft Research New England, and adjunct professor, electrical engineering and computer science department, computer science and artificial intelligence laboratory, MIT, Cambridge, USA. The lecture on “Reliable Meaningful Communication“ was attended by nearly 150 educationists and students.

The lecture, which commenced with a brief introduction to the history of the mathematical theory of communication, focused on giving an in-depth description of Su dan's work on efficient algorithms that can deal with large amounts of error, and on communication when sender and receiver are uncertain about each other's context.

Part of the ISF lectures, the talk aimed at encouraging students in the country to pursue math at advanced levels.

Speaking on the occasion, Shibulal SD, president, ISF said, “In our efforts to nurture a culture of science and research in the country, we commenced the ISF lecture series in 2011. In its fourth year, we continue to establish multilateral conversations with a wider audience about science in India to inform them about different fields of scientific research and studies and to inspire them to take up research as a career.“

Sudan's current research in terests lie in the interface of computation and communication, particularly in the role of errors in this interface. Sudan is the recipient of several awards, including the ACM Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation (1993), the Godel Prize (2001), and the Rolf Nevanlinna Prize (2002). He is also a fellow of ACM and the American Mathematical Society.
