Mumbai University ranks 125th in Asia; IIT-Bombay is at 46th

The University of Mumbai added another feather in its cap by rising up the ranks in the QS Asia University Rankings report that was released on Wednesday. The university has managed to grab the 125th spot with 46.3 points ahead of other traditional universities in the country and has maintained a consistent rise over the past five years. The ranking based on various parameters include academic and employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per paper, papers per faculty among others. The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) has, however, secured a better finish with the 46th rank with 71.6 points.

The Quacquarelli Symonds Asia University Rankings has seen only three institutes from India that made it to the top 50. It includes a first-time entrant the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (IISc) at 34 with a score of 81.1, followed by Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) at 42 with a score of 72.9 and IIT-Bombay at 46 with 71.6 points. Five IITs and Delhi University, which is ranked 91 with a score of 55.3, have made to the top 100 list in Asia.

While the MU has shown consistent growth in the past five years, senior academicians point to the fact that the university’s ranking has spiraled. “The university has a long way to go to get into the top 100 university in Asia bracket. In 2010 MU was ranked 96, and the rank slipped to 151 in 2011. After that MU’s rank has seen an improvement, but it has still not managed to get back its position of 2010. Officials should work at having a holistic improvement in growth as they are now competing with newer institutions that have made it to the top,” said the senior academician.

However, Dr Rajan Welukar, vice-chancellor of MU, said, “For the last five years, QS ranking of the University of Mumbai has improved consistently. It is due to stimulating intellectual and administrative efforts of my colleagues and sincere efforts of the dear students, the credit goes to them. The trend suggests that it is not a distant dream to rank amongst the first 100 in the near future.”
