MU LAUNCHES AN ONLINE DATABASE SYSTEM

THE UNIVERSITY OF MUMBAI RECENTLY LAUNCHED THE NATIONAL ACADEMIC DEPOSITORY TO MAINTAIN AN ONLINE DATABASE OF THE ACADEMIC RECORDS OF ITS STUDENTS

Rajan Welukar, vice chancellor, University of Mumbai(MU), recently launched the university's National Academic Depository (NAD) in the presence of Dinesh Bhonde, controller of examinations and senior officials of MU, Central Depository Services (India) Limited (CDSL) and Infosys.NAD is a national database set up by the CDSL to maintain an online database system of academic records of its students.

Speaking on the occasion Welukar said, “NAD will enable universities and employers to check the veracity of mark sheets and degree certificates issued by MU with the NAD database.“ The new system is aimed at facilitating online verification and easy retrieval of academic records, thereby eliminating the need for students to physically approach educational institutions to obtain attestations and transcripts of certificates. The system will also deal with issues revolving around forged certificates.

It will also offer an online interface that will enable employers and other academic institutions to verify the academic records of a candidate with their consent.

The mark sheets will be designed with watermark and print securities and can be printed by the candidates or authorised per sons institutions at any point in time. Moreover, convocation certificates will be printed with various security codes and will be stored in the depository system along with the database of convocation awards, thereby maintaining the authenticity of the degree.

CDSL had introduced NAD in 2010 with a view to obviate the issues associated with the issue of academic mark sheets, degrees and convocation certificates in paper form.
