Domain – Lesser-Known Treasures from the Web
Philosophy is an intimidating subject for beginners. If you search
online, the thoughts of philosophers from ancient times to the early-20th
century are available for free. The question is, where do you begin? Do you
need to read each one of Plato’s dialogues, and our Vedas and Upanishads? Do
you need to wrack your brain over Kant and Nietzsche?
The Sophia Project aims to make life easy for rookies. Started in the 1990s, it
aims to be the “world’s largest online repository for free educational
resources in the fields of philosophy and ethics for the sole purpose of
expanding the domain of human wisdom.”
The key words are ‘free’ and ‘educational’. There are bigger
sites, but Sophia Project guides you with introductory essays and snipped
originals.
Before diving into the books of famous philosophers, you can read
up on the history of philosophy, logic, ethics, and concepts like monism and
dualism.
The essays cover different periods, viz, classical, mediaeval,
modern and contemporary. There is a comprehensive section on Eastern philosophy
as well that will give you commentaries by Adi Shankara, Swami Vivekananda, Sri
Aurobindo, Mahatma Gandhi, besides excerpts from the originals texts.
Once you have a grasp of the basics, reading the original texts
will become easier.
