Quick Tips @ Video Editing: A Beginners Guide
With today’s phones allowing users to easily shoot 4k videos in good quality, the source content is guaranteed to be good. But the final bit of ‘spit & polish’ only comes from post processing. Hitesh Raj Bhagat & Karan Bajaj offer some tips and show you how you can use free apps to make almost any video better
SMARTPHONE
Magisto
If it’s just a basic audio track and theme effect that you need, Magisto is the
easiest of the lot. The app scans and shows all available videos and photos
from your device. However, the free version only allows 15 second video or 5
photos to be imported. You can choose from a preset theme, choose background
music from the library, add a title, set movie length and the app does the
rest. Once the video is edited, you can view it in the app and save it. Keep in
mind that the free version also adds a watermark.
Quik
This is one of our favorite video editing apps. You can
use it in landscape or portrait mode, there is no registration required and
there is no video length limit. Just import the video, select video effects,
choose audio, crop it, change speed, rotate, add filters or overlay text. You
can even combine multiple images and videos. You can choose to save videos in
1080p HD or higher resolution as per preference. You can choose whether you
want a watermark to appear at the end of the video — there is no watermark
added while the video plays.
Adobe
Premiere Clip
Adobe’s free video editor lets you import content from
your device, Dropbox, Google Drive and Creative Cloud. You can choose to have
the app enhance a video automatically (adjust the playback speed and background
music) or manually edit all the elements (trim length, sequence, exposure, fade
effects and apply filters). Occasional users will be happy with the automatic
function, but if you are learning editing and want better controls, we suggest
the manual mode. When exporting, there is no visible watermark.
KineMaster
Pro
This free app offers a plethora of options including
themes, background audio, overlay media/text as well as record and overlay
voice. You can apply audio/videofade-in/out, adjust colours and even apply
filters. You can import video from the phone or from cloud storage to the app
directly. It works only in landscape mode with the screen split into a preview
window and a timeline. While there are no ads, the app does put a watermark on
the video.
OpenShot
If you prefer something basic yet efficient, check out
OpenShot. The free software is available for Windows, MAC and Linux. supports
all ma- formats, comes with over 400 video transition fects and even allows you
to add limited layers for iting. This is also of the few free tools with supfor
3D animation fects. In addi- OpenShot supports 4k video ing and you can even
export eos at 4k resolution with frame rate. Get it from www.openshot.org.
DESKTOP
Shotcut
Available for Windows, MAC and Linux, this free desktop
video editor offers support for all major video formats and can even edit 4k
resolution. The interface is slightly cluttered but there’s a short learning
curve. For videos, you can do colour correction, add transitions, control video
fade effects, adjust playback speed and apply filters. You have the freedom to control
volume level, apply audio filters, cross-fade as well as generate specific
tones. Get it from https://shotcut.org.
QUICK TIPS
While
the basics of video editing are
fairly simple, you can always look up more advanced techniques on YouTube. For
a complete glossary and helpful articles on the subject, head to
MediaCollege.com.
Here, you’ll find articles explaining formats, video resolutions, aspect ratios
and how to add basic special effects.
In
case MediaCollege is
too ‘old school’ for you, try the RocketJump Film School — also completely free
and online. The curriculum includes directing, producing, editing,
cinematography, sound, scriptwriting and so on. Once you’re done with every
segment, you could start directing mini movies of your own.
Sometimes,
all a video needs to liven
things up are some sound effects or backing audio tracks. You can download all
of these, completely free, from places like SoundBible.com, Freestockmusic.com,
Freeplaymusic.com, Jamendo.com, premiumbeat.com, Freemusicarchive.org and
many more.
No
matter how good the edit, some things
just can’t be covered up if the source material isn’t up to the mark. Weak
audio quality, noisy background, poor lighting and shaky video will give you
bad video. Even if you record videos on a phone, consider switching to a
dedicated microphone, external light source and tripod/stabilizer.
If you
love traveling and capture
video on a phone, invest in one that shoots great video. Phones that shoot the
highest quality & most stable video include the Samsung Galaxy Note 8,
iPhone 8 Plus/X and Google Pixel 2/2XL. The multi-axis optical stabilization on
these phones smoothens out micro judder, camera shake and all kinds of lateral
movement.
