The Making of Public Libraries – in Delhi and the Presidencies

The Making of Public Libraries – in Delhi and the Presidencies

Compared to the three libraries established in Calcutta, Bombay and Madras, the Delhi Public Library was a late starter.

·         The Asiatic Society of Bombay
·         National Library of India in 1953 (Calcutta)
·         The Connemara Public Library, Madras – now Chennai

Compared to the three libraries established in the presidencies of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras, the Delhi Public Library was a late starter.

The library stocks 1.5 million books. Despite its 72,000-strong membership, 35 branches, children’s library, braille services and mobile libraries, it still manages to project a dark and dingy appearance. Unlike the grand structures that house the other three libraries at Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai, the Delhi Public Library is located in an entirely unwelcoming ambience – opposite the Old Delhi Railway Station.
