Two more scholarships for OBC school students

Two more scholarships for OBC school students

The state government has extended two of its existing scholarship schemes for school students to the other backward castes (OBC).

In a recent government resolution (GR), the state cabinet has extended the Savitribai Phule scholarship scheme under which the OBC girl students from Class 8 to Class 10 get 1,000 every year. The scheme was earlier limited to girl students from SC, NT and special backward castes. The government has also extended the Vasantrao Naik Award which was earlier given to NT and VJNT students who top in Class 10 and Class 12 examinations from the division and the board to OBC students. The award which contains a cash prize of 1 lakh and 50,000 respectively will now be given to OBC students.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting held on January 15, 2019. “These schemes have been extended to OBC students to help address the issue of dropouts in schools due to poor family background. It would also boost them to perform well in their exams,” reads the GR. The initiatives are part of the 736-crore aid given to various backward castes in the state and will be implemented from the current academic year.
