Medical grads can now do their 1-yr rural service part-time too

MUMBAI: Medical graduates from state-run institutes in Maharashtra now have more options to choose from when they go for their compulsory one-year service in a rural area. Until now, students could only apply to state government public health programmes — and on a full-time basis — for their rural stints.

The state government will now let graduates apply for part-time and contractual jobs with rural hospitals under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), too, to finish the one-year bond.

Dr Pravin Shingare, director, Directorate of Medical Education & Research (DMER), said the new rules were released in a government resolution (GR) from the state medical education department last week. While the new rules give students more options for the rural bond service, they will still need to complete the stint within a year of graduating.

An earlier government resolution, dated October 12, 2017, said all medical students from government colleges must complete a year-long mandatory bond service in a rural area to get their MBBS degree. The regulation was issued after thousands of students were found skipping this step altogether.

Every year, nearly 2,500 students clear MBBS from government institutes.

But, after the bond service was made compulsory, students complained there weren’t enough openings for them to complete their rural-stint after graduating, said Sanjay Deshmukh, the state medical education secretary.
