Blockchain @ It’s implementation in LIS Domain

Blockchain @ It’s implementation in LIS Domain

On 18th July 2018, I had an opportunity to attend IMA CMO Forum – Round Table Discussion at Sofitel BKC, the topic was “Blockchain: A Transformative Future” delivered by Mr. Jaspreet Bindra.

Key Learning from the Sessions

How can blockchain be implemented in LIS?

The blockchain is a blistering topic, the latest catchphrase of the year, blockchain promises a new, decentralized way of recording and storing data. The experts are speculating about its potential uses in many domains.

San José State University’s School of Information has received a $100,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, or IMLS, to find out whether blockchain could be useful for libraries.

What is a blockchain?

In simple terms, a blockchain can be described as an append-only transaction ledger. What that means is that the ledger can be written onto with new information, but the previous information, stored in blocks, cannot be edited, adjusted or changed.

Important features of Blockchain are:

·         Transaction ledgers
·         History can be traced
·         Immutable
·         Consensus-driven
·         Decentralized
·         Trustless (it's not based on a system of trust)
·         Secured by cryptography
·         Smart Contract
·         Can be made public

Types of Blockchain

·         Public Blockchain
·         Federated Blockchain
·         Private Blockchain

Blockchain Use in Today’s era domains

·         Crypto Currency Exchanges
·         Copyright Protection
·         Various Securities Exchanges
·         Global Payment
·         Supply Chain Auditors
·         Digital Identity
·         Micro Finance
·         Crowd Funding
·         Voting
·         E-Commerce
·         Health Care
·         Education
·         Real Estate
·         Escrow
·         Title Records
·         Forecast
·         Logistics

Blockchain @ LIS

Copyright Protection | Blockchain can help us in protecting the copyright of literary works.  If any works release under the blockchain framework, then it will be an easy task to find who had infringed the copyright law in terms of that specific work.

Plagiarism | Blockchain can act as a tool to check issue regarding the plagiarism issues.

Digital Right Management (DRM) | Suppose any education audio or video materials release under Blockchain & DRM framework then its misuse can be stopped and traced easily.

Online Resource Access Authentication | Again we can use Blockchain frame to provide access of E-Resource to the user, so we can avoid any wrongdoing.

Digital Library / Institutional Repository | Data stored in Digital Library / Institutional Repository under the Blockchain framework will be more secured in terms of data theft or data loss.

Note | Thanks to IMA for organising such a wonderful discussion and many thanks to Mr. Jaspreet Bindra for delivering such a fabulous session on the said topic
