Varsity proposes law diploma via correspondence

MUMBAI: Even as the Mumbai University ( MU) mooted a cor respondence course in law given the rising popularity of the course, a one-of-its kind post-graduate diploma in judicial services has been approved.

Plans for the course were cleared at meeting between the Bar Council of Maharashtra and officials of the university. According to the bar council, a professional course such as law should not be made available as a correspondence course and instead gave their nod to the part-time diploma.

The head of the university law department, Ashok Yende said that the course will train young lawyers and law graduates for the judge’s exam.
“We want the best lawyers in the state to be judges in the largest courts of the country. The course will be part-time but a degree in l aw will be compulsory for admissions, “he said.

While Yende said that the course is likely to begin from the first week of September, the university’s academic and management council is yet to give its final nod.

The fees and other details of the same are yet to be finalised, but we are looking at a fee of around Rs 8,000,” added Yende.

The Board of Studies for Law, along with the Bar Council of Maharashtra, will meet and discuss the final details including the curriculum, intake capacity and exam pattern.
