BMC to add more seats in its medical colleges

The BMC decision follows after the state medical education department's recent announcement to tackle the problem of shortage of doctors in the state-run hospitals by starting medical colleges at the district level on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, while increasing the number of seats for students in the already existing colleges.

There is good news for students who want to pursue medical education. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to increase the number of seats in its medical colleges in the city. Increasing the number of seats in all the four civic-run medical colleges has been a long-pending demand.

The BMC decision follows after the state medical education department's recent announcement to tackle the problem of shortage of doctors in the state-run hospitals by starting medical colleges at the district level on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, while increasing the number of seats for students in the already existing colleges.

As per the Medical Council of India (MCI) records, by March 31, 2014, 9.29 lakh doctors were registered in the Indian Medical Register. Assuming that 80 per cent of them are available at any given point of time, nearly 7.4 lakh are actually available for active services. This results in a poor doctor to patient ratio — 1:1,674. The World Health Organisation (WHO) norms mandates it to be maximum 1:1,000.

"MCI had already issued directives to increase seats in medical colleges. We have got the essential certificate from the state medical education department to increase the number of seats in Sion hospital. We have increased the seats in KEM and Nair hospitals. Also, we will be submitting a proposal to the government to increase the number of post-graduate seats in Sion hospital." said Sanjay Deshmukh, additional municipal commissioner.

The four functional medical colleges run by the BMC are Topiwala Medical National College run along with Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central, Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College run along with KEM Hospital in Parel, Lokmanya Tilak Medical College run along with Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in Sion and Cooper Medical College, Vile Parle.

BMC has a plan to add 40 seats in KEM Hospital which currently has 180 MBBS seats. Nair Hospital has 120 seats and the plan is to add 30 seats in it and in Sion Hospital they may add 50 seats to the existing 100.

Currently, MCI-approved colleges across Maharashtra offer 5,945 MBBS seats in 44 medical colleges.

Dr Suhasini Nagda, director, Major Hospitals, she says: "The need of hour is to increase the MBBS seats. Patient workload has increased and there is a need to create more doctors. As per rules, we are increasing the MBBS seats in our medical college."
