QS University Rankings: Asia 2015 – a ranking

University of
Mumbai (MU) has moved up in the list of top 100 universities in the recently
released QS- BRICS university rankings. MU secured 58th rank, compared to
68 last year. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, is the
highest-ranking institution from India – ranking fifth. The Indian Institute of
Technology – Bombay (IITB) – was ranked 16th.
Also, MU, which has nearly 740 affiliated colleges, stands third among traditional universities in the country; University of Delhi ranks 46, while University of Calcutta is 52nd. Indian Institute of Technology – Delhi, at 13, is the second highest ranking Indian institution. There are 15 Indian universities in the list of top 100.
The QS World University Rankings is an annual listing, and apart from the global overall rankings, there are three regional lists, including one for the BRICS, an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the major emerging economies of the world. The listing, which is generated by different methodologies, is one of the most accepted university measures across the world. The rankings are based on parameters such as research, teaching, employability and international outlook to assess universities’ performance. MU scored 61.5 out of 100 for academic reputation, while it scored 93.8 for employer reputation.
Reacting to MU’s rise in the ranks, Sanjay Deshmukh, the new vice chancellor said, “We have achieved this feat because of continued and sustained efforts of our teachers and students in research and development. MU is committed to use its scientific excellence for societal development.”
However, MU slid from the 350-400 bracket in 2009 to 601-650 bracket in 2013 in QS World University Rankings. It improved slightly to rank 551 in 2014. The QS university rankings for BRICS nations started in 2013. Incidentally, the seventh BRICS nations summit started at Ufa, Russia, on Thursday.
Chinese universities have topped the list, taking three of the top spots. Tsinghua University, Peking University and Fudan University have topped the chart. Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow (Russia)
Apart from the IITs in Mumbai and Delhi, three other IITs are among the 20. IIT-Kanpur ranks 18 and IIT-Madras is 20.
