Extra hours to learn MS Office? Teachers fume
The
Directorate of Education (DoE) wants to make the teachers in government schools
“computer literate” and train them for one hour, before/after school, on how to
use MS Office, access internet and download photos. Teachers are, however,
questioning the “extra-hour” move, saying everyone knows these things nowadays.
According to a circular issued by DoE director Sanjay Goel, “If the teacher is
not computer literate, this digital revolution will just pass him/ her by...
DoE has decided to provide tablets to teachers with up-to-date specifications
so that they can record and transfer data, lesson plan, attendance, marks etc
online rather than manual.”
However, the
teachers are anything but impressed. “This training, even if it has to happen,
should be done during school hours. Why should we be made to stay extra,” asked
Shoaib Rana, science teacher at Government Boys’ Senior Secondary School at
Sunder Nagri. “These days everyone knows how to do these things; what’s the
point of wasting time and resources? They are talking of digital revolution but
the internet connection in schools are poor,” he added.
The newly
recruited computer teachers will impart the training to a group of 10 teachers
each. For morning shift schools, the training will be held one hour after
school, and for evening ones, an hour before the school.
The principal
of each school will have to divide the teachers into groups and carry on the
training for 15 working days. It is mandatory for the teachers to attend as
after the training, the principal will give a certificate stating that the
teacher has completed it.
According to
a source, this training seeks to teach the participants how to use the recently
launched Android application called ‘DOE Delhi’ to record attendance,
assignments, syllabus and other class-related infor mation.
“We are not
going to learn anything new. What is the point of keeping us extra hours for
this? We already do a lot of administrative work; they are adding another one,”
said Manish Guar, physical education teacher at Government Co-ed Senior
Secondary School, Raghuvir Nagar JJ colony.
Even
Government School Teachers’ Association (GSTA) has opposed the move, saying the
government brings “anti-teacher” policies.
In May 2017,
the government had asked teachers to stay back for one hour on Fridays to
discuss the academic quality and progress of teaching-learning. After the
teachers’ protests, DoE had adjusted it within schools hours.
