Deleting Google search data gets easier

Deleting Google search data gets easier

On a day when Apple CEO Tim Cook pitched for greater privacy of user data with a framework similar to GDPR (Europe’s new data law), Google rolled out new tools that will give users more control over their search history. The internet search giant will now enable you to review or delete your search activity within Google Search, and quickly get back to finding what you were searching for.

Users can also access their activity controls to decide what information Google saves to their account and uses to make Search and other Google services faster, smarter and more useful, said Eric Miraglia, director of product management, privacy and data protection office, Google.

“Next year, we’ll expand this to Maps, followed by many other Google products. Having access to relevant and actionable privacy controls directly from the Google products you use every day is just one way that we are continuously working to build privacy that works for everyone,” Miraglia added in the blog post. This is also an effort by Google to make these privacy tools much easier to access and use. They are often buried under complex navigation settings.

When a user uses Search, Google collects data including the terms one searches for, links one interacts with and other information like the location from where the search is being made. The new changes will enable a user to switch off data collection by audio and voice activity. Ad personalisation can be similarly switched off.

Google recently also had announced tighter privacy policies for third-party apps on its Play Store. It put restrictions on the permissions these apps could ask for from users. Data privacy has been one of the hottest debates across major internet economies. Facebook has been rocked by a series of data leaks. In India, too, global tech giants are being put under scrutiny over measures they are taking to enhance user privacy.
