Students' union writes to Pune
university, says turnout will be low.
Student
unions are annoyed after Savitribai Phule Pune University rescheduled the
Maharashtra State Level Eligibility Test (for teachers) on September 6, the day
Gokulashtami (Dahi Handi) will be celebrated across the state. The unions have
now written to the university, which conducts the exam, to change the date to
prevent students from getting inconvenienced.
According
to Parhar Vidhyarthi Sanghatana (PVS), students will face traffic snarls and
chaos on the streets if the exam is conducted on Gokulashtami day. The union
also criticised the committee that conducts the exam.
“While
the exam is supposed to be conducted every six months, like the National Level
Eligibility test, they are conducting it after two years now. All this is being
ignored by the University Grants Commission (UGC),” said Manoj Tekade of PVS.
The
exam was originally scheduled to be held August 30, but the university issued a
circular stating that it had been re-scheduled to September 6 due to Kumbh Mela
at Nashik.
“If
they conduct the exam on September 6 , there will be a very low turnout. We
have written to the SLET committee at Pune university to reschedule the exam on
a day that will be convenient for candidates from across the state. If they
fail to do so, we will come out in huge numbers and protest,” said Ajay
Tapkeer, another member of PVS.
When
contacted, the coordinator for SLET in Pune university said, “We have received
the letter by the Vidyarthi Sanghatana, we will be discussing the matter with
the committee and take a call on the issue. We too are concerned about the
candidates.”
SLET
is conducted for the post of assistant professors. There are a total of 15 main
centres in Mumbai.
