An
international legal journal edited in Atlanta has retracted a paper authored by
Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor Chandra Krishnamurthy following an
investigation that established the work to be plagiarised.
The
International Journal of Legal Information (IJLI) which is the official journal
of the International Association of Law Libraries (IALL), announced that it was
removing the paper, ‘Legal Education and Legal Profession in India,’ published
in Volume 36, Summer 2008 of the journal “on the grounds of plagiarism.”
At
the time of publication of the paper, Ms. Krishnamurthy was Vice-Chancellor of
Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (SNDT) Women’s University, Mumbai.
It
was on February 1, 2013, that she assumed charged as Vice-Chancellor of
Pondicherry University.
The
notice of retraction posted on the web page of the journal states: “This paper
has been removed on the grounds of plagiarism. This case was fully investigated
and plagiarism was confirmed. No response was obtained from the accused
offender.”
A
claim of plagiarism was raised with the journal by Professor S.A. Abbasi of
Pondicherry University, who retired in June.
“This
event forms a chapter of shame in the history of Indian academic world.
For the first time, a Vice-Chancellor of a Central University has
been proclaimed guilty of plagiarism by an international organisation,” he
said.
