Students
from self financed programmes offered in Mumbai University-affiliated colleges
will now have to describe their learning outcome in their projects submitted
for internal assessments .The 15-mark
project assigned by colleges should have at least 10 pages, of which one should
be dedicated to describe what they have learnt from the project. The university
has come out with standard guidelines for internal assessments for all
specialized programmes, including BMS, BMM, BSc-IT, BAF , BBI and BFM. The
guidelines were approved by academic council members at a meeting on Monday .
Dean of commerce, Madhu Nair, who presented
the guidelines, said there was a great disparity in the way colleges conducted
assessment. “If one college is following all rules for implementing internal
assessment, as prescribed by the university, and the other only conducts a
random test for 20 marks, it will be unfair to students from the college
following rules. In the credit-based grading system, a student's performance
from the first and second years is also calculated to get the cumulative
performance. Therefore, it was necessary
to have standard guidelines,“ said Nair, adding that the university was also
contemplating setting papers for semester-end exams in the first and second
years of the undergraduate programme.
He said if there was a complaint against any
college, the local inquiry committee will also have a guide to check if the
colleges complied with all norms. Colleges have to maintain records for all
exams for at least six months. Students will now have to submit a hard copy of
the assignment. The university has also laid down guidelines for the content in
those 10 pages.Apart from the name and college details, table of contents,
learn ing outcome, references, students have to dedicate at least five pages
for the introduction, body of the content and the conclusions. The list of
references should be specified by the teachers. Students will have to submit a
project for each course too.
A principal said most good colleges with
approved principals follow the guidelines.
