Google to fund some YouTube content creators facing copyright takedown notices
YouTube owner Google has said it will help fund up to $1m (£650,000) in legal fees to content creators facing copyright takedown notices.
Google said it will step in if their material is considered fair use. The firm was however quick to add that only a handful of people had been chosen to receive this support.
"We are offering legal support to a handful of videos that we believe represent clear fair uses which have been subject to DMCA takedowns," wrote Fred Von Lohmann, Google's copyright legal director, in a blog post. He added that Google would keep these videos online in US and cover cost of any lawsuits.
"We're doing this because we recognise that creators can be intimidated by the DMCA's counter-notification process and the potential for litigation that comes with it,” said Lohmann.
