Give yourself some time
Sometimes, it is important to take that extra time to know what interests you, rather than follow something you are not cut out for
Two weeks into the new year and our resolutions are already old. Or set aside as being impossibly optimistic, even unrealistic. Or just plain forgotten.
Last fortnight, I wrote about the need to take an occasional reality check now to see where our time is going, and whether it is in a direction we are happy with. Soon after, I had the pleasure of interacting with a young parent whose nine-year-old daughter was participating in a national-level equestrian event. Unlike many parents I meet these days, he believes that it is a bad idea for children to decide on a path very early in life. There is virtue attached to being sure of what one wants to do, and then charting a straight and narrow course towards that goal. Our education system in fact pushes us to do this, having to select between “arts” and “science” even before we’ve turned 15, and then honing that choice further within the next two years of high school or junior college. As a result, we fail to be exposed to many possibilities, and do not have the opportunity to try our hand at multiple things before settling on an option.
