Install biometrics or lose grants, govt tells schools
Mumbai: The state education
department has directed all government-aided schools to install biometric
attendance system for students and teachers to continue to receive salary
and non-salary aid.
In a circular issued on October 24,
the education department said that schools will get the funds only if the
attendance for students and teachers is recorded using a biometric
system.
The decision to introduce biometric attendance system was announced last year by school education minister Vinod Tawde to crackdown on bogus teachers and students on a school's roll. There were instances of students who were registered with a school but attending classes, but school continued to receive grant for them.
The department has asked local
education officers to identify schools that still did not have the biometric
systems.
Most schools in Mumbai don't have biometric attendance system, especially for students. "The government has just started installing the systems, so it will be some time before the work is completed. The government should consider this and not stop aid if there is a delay from its end," said Prashant Redij, principal, Hilda Convent High School, Kandivli.
