Collectors create digital bank of Vande Mataram versions
It
is one of the most recorded and widely interpreted songs, and now the Centre
for Indian Music Experience (IME) in Bengaluru, an interactive music museum, is
ready to host 50 digital versions of it.
‘Vande
Mataram’ has been reinterpreted and recorded 125 times since Bankim Chandra
Chattopadhyay wrote it.
While
the Desh raag version played by Akashvani every morning is the most
popular, many artistes have brought their own flavour to it.
The
1952 film Anand Math had Lata Mangeshkar singing the song in a duet with
Dilip Kumar Roy.
A
more recent version by A. R. Rahman is a big hit.
“I
have all the 125 versions of ‘Vande Mataram’ released in spool, gramophone
record, LP, cassette, CD and digital versions,” says Suresh Chandvankar,
retired scientist and Founder of the Mumbai-based Society of Indian Record
Collectors.
The
25-year-old initiative with 250 members preserves the legacy of recorded music.
Mr. Chandvankar, who has 25,000 records in his personal collection, says, “We
have listening sessions for audiences where we discuss freedom movement songs.
Digital versions
The
Centre for Indian Music Experience, to be opened soon, has received digital
versions of ‘Vande Mataram’ from the Society. This is available in its ‘Songs
of the Nation’ gallery.
“Vande
Mataram is part of national identity. Music played a major role in our freedom
movement. The history of each song in our collection is available,” says Manasi
Prasad, Project Director, IME.
Tagore to Rahman
“From
Rabindranath Tagore to A. R. Rahman, Shubha Mudgal and Kaushiki Chakraborty and
beyond, the song has inspired numerous tunes in independent India,” says Mr.
Chandvankar.
“It
is said that V. D. Ambhaikar recorded in raag Khambavati and presented
it to the Constitution Committee before the official declaration. Moghubai
Kurdikar, Kishori Amonkar’s mother, recorded a piece that was rejected for its
high pitch,” he says.
