Closure of Night school row @: Teachers, student hold 'battery morcha' in Mumbai
MUMBAI: Hundreds of teachers and
students in the city carried out a 'battery morcha' - a march with torches -
along the Chowpatty in South Mumbai to protest against the state's new rules
which may have resulted in the closure of night schools.
A recent government resolution proposed to change the staffing pattern at schools across the state. This was expected to affect night schools with lower student strength and could result in the schools closure. Organised by Shikshak Bharti, a teacher's organisation, and Chatra Bharti, a students' organisation, the march started from Chowpatty and continued for over one and a half hour till they reached Marine Drive. "There is a lot of professional benefit from night schools as people can pursue education while they work, hence shutting down night schools is not the right move," said MLC Kapil Patil who participated in the march.
Ahead of the march, representatives of various organisations also met school education minister Vinod Tawde and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. Tawde said, "Government will ensure that no night school is closed down. Special provisions will be also made to enhance existing standards in night schools."
