Govt to set up redressal bodies for pvt schoolteachers, staffers

To protect the interests of teachers and staffers in private schools across the state, the education department has called for setting up a quasi-judicial body to address their complaints. The committees will have six months to hold hearings and resolve the complaints.

According to a government resolution issued by the school education department, a three-member committee will be set up for teachers and members of private schools aided and unaided —at the primary and secondary levels (classes I to X). This committee will be headed by the deputy director of the division and will include the education inspector and the assistant director. Similarly, for teachers from the higher secondary section, a two-member committee led by the divisional chairperson of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education will be set up.

These committees will give both sides an opportunity to be heard and pronounce an order based on rules, government resolutions and circulars. The committee will also have to invite education inspectors from other regions to the hearings for an objective view.

Teachers, however, are wary of implementation. “There are several such redressal forums for teachers, but most of them include education department officials who may be on good terms with the school managements. This means redressal is often not unbiased,” said a teacher form a suburban private school.

Some others are more hopeful. “Currently, most committees for redressal are at the school level and there is very little a teacher can do in case the complaint is against the school management. If the committee can resolve the complaints, it will also help teachers save the money and resources needed to move court for redressal,” said Prashant Redij, member of the Mumbai Principals’ Association.
