Solapur varsity to be renamed @ Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur Vidyapeeth
The Maharashtra government has decided to rename Solapur University as “Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur Vidyapeeth”, Education Minister Vinod Tawde said on Saturday.
The renaming function will be on May 31 to coincide with the birth anniversary of Ahilyadevi Holkar, he said.
Speaking at a meeting of representatives of the Veershaiv Lingayat and Dhangar communities at Mantralaya, he said the decision was taken on the recommendation of a sub-committee that was set up, as per a Cabinet decision, to go into the details of renaming the university.
Proposals to name Solapur Airport after Mahatma Basaveshwar and rename Solapur railway station as Shri Siddheshwar Railway Terminus would be sent to the authorities, he added.
He said that a Mahatma Basaveshwar memorial would be erected at Solapur and a committee under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would be constituted for it.
He said a Mahatma Basaveshwar Finance Corporation would be set up to provide financial assistance to youth from the Veershaiv Lingayat community.
He said they would look into the possibility of setting up a Maharashtra Veershaiv-Lingayat Board.
