Laptop with splittable keyboard

Laptop with splittable keyboard

TOKYO —

King Jim Co Ltd has announced it will release a notebook computer with an 8-inch screen and a splittable keyboard early next year. The notebook, Portabook XMC10, is the company’s first personal computer product and scheduled to be released Feb 12.

Though there is no manufacturer’s suggested retail price, its price is expected to be about ¥90,000.

When folded, the Portabook XMC10 measures only 204 x 153mm. On the other hand, it comes with a keyboard as large as that of a 12-inch notebook computer. King Jim expects that the notebook will make it easier to make corrections to presentation materials, check email, etc outdoors, compared with smartphones and tablet computers. The mass of the new product is about 830 grams.

The keyboard can be split in the center, and each of the right and left halves can be rotated by 90° and stored. The rotating mechanism under the keyboard is not exposed and dust-proof and endured 20,000 times of opening and closing in a test.

The transverse and longitudinal pitches and stroke of the keys are 18mm, 15.5mm and 1.5mm, respectively. The perimeter of the keyboard was reinforced with a 1.2mm-thick aluminum frame so that the keys can be stably pressed even on the laps, a table in a train/airplane, etc, according to King Jim.

“Its main feature is its keyboard,” the company said. “So, we made special efforts to improve the texture of the keys and reduce noise.”
The notebook is also equipped with an optical pointing device and three clickable buttons.

The Portabook XMC10 comes with Windows 10 Home (64-bit), Microsoft Corp’s Office Mobile and Office 365 (valid for one year). The pixel count of its 8-inch LCD panel is 1,280 x 768. And it is equipped with a webcam (about 2 Mpixels)

The notebook is charged via a Micro USB port. As in the case of smartphones and tablet computers, portable rechargeable batteries can be used for charging. It takes about three hours to fully charge the product, which can operate for about five hours on the battery.

Other specifications are as follows.
CPU: Intel Atom x7-Z8700 (2.4GHz)
Main memory: 2 Gbytes
Storage: 32-Gbyte eMMC
Wireless functions: IEEE 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0+EDR
Interfaces: 1 HDMI port, 1 VGA port, 1 USB2.0 port, 1 SD memory card slot, 1 microphone/headphone port.
