Cops bust pirated books racket, seize goods worth ` 4.75 lakh

MUMBAI: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city police busted a books piracy racket operating from Bandra and arrested two people from the gang and seized 1,561 duplicate books of various internationally renowned writers worth Rs4.75 lakh.

According to an EOW official, the complainant, Nirajkumar Dahiya, a Noida resident, has been given power of attorney by the ‘Publishers of Association of UK and USA’ to protect the copyrights of various publications of international publishers.

Dahiya informed unit-12 of EOW that some people have stored and are selling pirated copies of some international publications. Following the information, a police team raided a shanty in a slum and a bookstall at Bandra (East) on Saturday afternoon. During the raid, the police seized 1,561 pirated books worth Rs 4.75lakh. The pirated books had titles like The Alchemist, and Diary of A Wimpy Kid.
