Periyar varsity digitises 752 theses, ranks second in TN

The Periyar University has been ranked second in the State for digitisng 752 doctoral theses which are made available for online readers across the world, said its Vice-Chancellor Swaminathan. Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre, an autonomous Inter-University Centre of the University Grants Commission (UGC), has accorded the status.

Speaking at a workshop organised by Periyar University Library on ‘e-book access’ here on Friday, Dr. Swaminathan said a library is a window to the world and it is the heart of any University.

Periyar University library accounted for 80,200 books of various arts and science disciplines and it subscribes 180 national and international journals and magazines that provide support to research and academic pursuit.

The University has made enormous efforts to get e-access of international journals for students and scholars and persuade them to work on their thesis with international standard, he said.

Apart from getting permission to access 4,000 e-journals in UGC INFONET, Periyar University gets e-resources from American Society for Microbiology, New York (14 journals on life sciences), Emerald Publications, UK (72 journals), World Scientific Publication of Singapore (4 journals), Sage Publications, New Delhi (7 journals) and the EBSCO database of the United States for case studies and research.

Dr. Swaminathan exhorted the participants to be familiar with modern technologies and ICT tools. He also urged them to make use of the online resources in research that gives global perspectives on any discipline they wished.

Ramesh Sankaran, Senior Manager, Pearson Education India Limited, Bengaluru and Appusamy from McGraw Hill Publication, Chennai, were the resource persons. N. Subramanian, Professor and the University Librarian, offered felicitations.
