‘Despite digital progress, books will remain forever’
Despite the digital revolution in the country, library of printed books would remain forever in the country,” State Planning Board Member RN Das here said on Friday.
Attending as chief guest on the inaugural ceremony of a national seminar on “Public Library and Digital Divide, Opportunities and Challenges,” Das said printed books are the fundamental knowledge; it will never die. Library would remain for all sections of the society which provides basic information from the primary level to the highest level of knowledge, Das said while narrating his own experience of using library from the primary school level to the present level.
Stating that although there the love for books is increasing in Odisha but the standard of library has gone down and also there is no standard book store in the State for which according to him “a strong library moment is essential.” Public library is people’s university, he said, adding efforts should be made for its improvement.
Inaugurating the two-day seminar, Sambalpur MLA Dr Raseswari Panigrahi appreciated the efforts of the members of the Sambalpur Public library for organising such a high standard seminar. She said the digital platforms cannot provide total knowledge as books provide for which the role of a library is very much essential in the society.
Attending as guest of honour, former Director, Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation , Ministry of Culture , Government of India, Dr Arun Kumar Chakraborty said books cannot be digital. Only a portion can be pasted in the computer to provide a brief knowledge.
With the invent of digital, the reading habits among the students is fast disappearing and they want shortcut for everything.
Addressing on the occasion, Dr Prabhakar Rath of Mizoram University said the role of library has been changing from its traditional method of access to the digital data. The mobiles which were used as voice communication are now working as data library and can be operated from any corners of the country.
Presenting the key note address, Prof Uma Kanjilal of IGNOU, New Delhi, stressed the need of adoption of new technology while keeping the book knowledge intact.
Among others, Chairman, Sambalpur Development Authority Bijaya Mohanty and Library secretary RN Mishra spoke. Chairman of Sambalpur Public Library and former VC of Berhampur University Prof Aditya Prasad Padhi presided over the function.
