Print media registrations up 5.13% in 2015-16
Hindi publications continue to lead number of publications
Bucking global trends, print media in India
grew by 5.13 per cent as 5,423 new publications were registered in 201516,
according to the annual report of Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI). The
total number of publications as of March 31 stood at 1,10,851.
Out of the total
registered publications, 16,136 were dailies and bi-tri weeklies, while the
remaining 94,715 were of other periodicities. The number of publications in
Hindi was the highest at 44,557, which was followed by 14,083 publications in
English.
Releasing the annual
report, Information & Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, said Hindi
publications continued to lead with over 31.44 crore copies per publishing day,
followed by English with over 6.54 crore copies and Urdu with over 5.17 crore
copies per publishing day.
“At the end of the year
201516, the State with the largest number of registered publications was Uttar
Pradesh with 16,984 publications, followed by Maharashtra and Delhi with 15,260
and 12,482 registered publications, respectively,” an official statement added.
Meanwhile, Naidu
announced that starting December 25, the government will be launching a 100day
campaign across the country on the theme of Good Governance.
Ministers and Members of
Parliament will travel across the country to highlight key initiatives of the
government that has been taken in the last two-and-half years, he added.
