Mum univ
plans free Wi-Fi on campuses for staff, students
Online Payment Facility For Fees Also
Likely Soon
Students from Mumbai University's 833
affiliated colleges and research centres will soon get free WiFi on their
campuses. Each student and college staffer will get about 20MB usage free per
day . An online payment facility for fees, stationery , canteen coupons,
dedicated chat services and smart classrooms could also become a reality soon
as the university has signed an MoU with Reliance Jio.
At
a principals' meet on Monday , vice-chancellor Sanjay Deshmukh announced plans
to go digital for every university activity . Free routers were given to
principals who registered on-thespot. A principal said Deshmukh spoke about
changes he brought about in the university in the last one year.He also spoke
about the money he raised by giving land to MMRDA to construct an elevated road
in Kalina. He also claimed there was a sur plus of Rs 67 crore in the budget
this year, which he plans to increase by next year, said a principal.
Reliance
plans to introduce the Jio Money service, through which colleges can go
cashless, for transactions.A closed-group channel for MU, where it can record,
store, and replay sessions or lectures to be viewed later, is also on the
anvil, said a principal But the proposal did not go down well with some
principals. “Though it will be convenient for students and staff on the campus,
subscription to Reliance Jio services should be optional. Even as the
university has not made it mandatory , what if it does later?“ said a
principal.
