Persons with disabilities make a difference
PANAJI: Persons with disabilities, who
seek jobs, have to constantly face social stigma and preconceived notions about
their ability to be productive in thier jobs. Shattering such stereotypical
apprehensions surrounding the employment of persons with disabilities, a Bharat
Petroleum fuel station in Porvorim has hired two persons with disabilities as
driveway salesmen.
John Fernandes, whose hearing is impaired, and Pravesh, a slow learner, started duties on Thursday at the petrol pump. Alloted the morning shift, they use basic sign language to communicate with the customers and carry a white board which indicates prices and types of fuel, for users to select.

Taha Haaziq,
along with the chairman of Sanjay Centre for Special
Education, Guruprasad Pawaskar, initiated the cause for the young alumni of
the institute to be employed. Padma
Kamat, the petrol pump dealer from Porvorim, welcomed the move by
conducting a training programme for them.
TOI had earlier reported the story of
Haaziq, a visually impaired young man who found himself a job at the Goa State
Central Library. Haaziq conceptualized the training programme for the
ex-students of Sanjay centre in an effort to empower others like him.
"Our goal is to bring them into
the mainstream employment sector. This will help in inclusion and enable them
to confidently interact with people on a daily basis," said Haaziq, who
helped train six boys over a period of one month.
