Univ holds back affiliation of 14 engg institutes

The university's academic council on Monday decided to hold back the extension of affiliation (EoA) of engineering colleges, which have been denied EoA by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). These colleges will be unable to admit new students in the current academic year.

The order will be repealed, if AICTE's action is also withdrawn or stayed by the court. The university's action was based on a report submitted by local inquiry committees, which visited all the 64 engineering colleges affiliated to Mumbai University. Of the 64 colleges, three have permanent affiliation from the university. The rest of the colleges seek temporary affiliation every year. This year, six engineering colleges in the city were not given the extension of approval by AICTE. Five others were asked to reduce their intake capacity by 50-75%. Most of these colleges were hobbled by “deficiency of land “or “lack an occupation certificate“. Some of the colleges in the city are not only established colleges but also sought after by students.

University's registrar, MA Khan, said that they will hold back the affiliation of these colleges, since they were rejected approval for admissions this year even by the AICTE. “If that order is somehow annulled, we will also revoke our order. We are also holding back the extension of affiliation of colleges, which have been asked to reduce intake, “said Khan. Most of the affected colleges have already moved the HC. Apart from holding back the affiliation of the colleges affected by the AICTE action, the university's academic council has decided to deny affiliation to the Universal College of Engineering based on the inquiry committee report and the council's review.  The college has shown certain deficiencies as per the university norms, said an academic council member.

Affiliation of two more colleges, despite getting positive report from the local inquiry committees, have been held back after council's review.
