MUMBAI: No university can directly
collaborate with a foreign university or college without the state government's
approval. The Maharashtra government has now decided to form a task force which
will approve any state university's tie-up with a foreign varsity.
This was decided on Monday at a meeting in Sahyadri guest house with all state vice-chancellors. Higher education minister Vinod Tawde has instructed all VCs to announce academic calendar for the year to avoid confusion.
Currently, many colleges and universities in the state have collaboration with universities abroad for combined courses. But there is no government control over such tie-ups. From now on, all collaboration agreements will be approved by the task force.
Tawde took a review of the academic timetable of all state universities and instructed the VCs to keep uniformity in the timetable. "Dates of admission, first day of college, examination time table and various programmes organized by the university should be announced on the very first day of college. Also, all universities should keep similarity in timetable for uniformity," he said.
The higher education department will form a four-member committee, which will review the timetable every three months. The government has also decided to amend the Maharashtra Universities Act 1994. "The amended Act will be tabled in the winter session," said Tawde.
