Checking your EPFO passbook

WHAT IS IT?

Your PF passbook will have details on monthly PF deposits and withdrawals under employer share and employee share. One column is for your pension contribution made from your monthly take-home. Your passbook will have your organisation name and ID and employee/ member name and ID. You can check it on EPFO’s website or app, Umang app by giving a missed call on ‘011-22901406’ or by sending ‘EPFOHO UAN’ to ‘7738299899’. To view it in any other language, use the first three letters of your preferred language. Example: “EPFOHO UAN TEL” for ‘Telegu’. The call and SMS option can be used after UAN registration.

HOW TO VIEW IT?

To view it on the website, go to the EPFO website, click on ‘For Employees’ tab and then follow the ‘UAN Member E-Sewa’ link. If you haven’t activated your UAN, do so by clicking on the ‘activate UAN’ link. Keep one of the three handy: UAN number, Aadhaar or PAN number. Logging onto the e-Sewa portal will let you check your employment history, UAN card, KYC information, member passbook and other details. You can check your passbook under the ‘view’ option six hours after your UAN registration. After you login, you will see one or multiple member IDs linked to your passbook, depending on employment history.

WHY MUST YOU CHECK IT?

It is important to keep a track if your employer(s) have been depositing their share of the provident fund diligently and periodically. “It is mainly essential for employee awareness,” said Ankit Bhansali, chartered accountant with Mumbai-based tax consultant firm, Tax Baniya. Also, the PF interest that you earn is exempt from taxes and is eligible for deduction under section 80 (C) of the Income Tax Act. Here, your member passbook will help you fetch exact details. “It also helps you to maintain a record of the funds available with you and plan your retirement accordingly,” he said.
